How To Mourn Without Bitterness
How To Maintain After A Tragedy.
At the ripe age of 15 years old, tragedy struck my family with the murder of our brother Dedric Lamont Harrison. You see Dedric was my sisters twin, a cool, calm, and somewhat shy 24 year old back in 1985, before his departure. I firmly believe that the young lady, his children's mother, and also his murderer, was just a pawn used by satan. As a sophomore, I was attending Jefferson High School on the day before the shooting; excited about the next days baseball game where I was to start short-stop my first Varsity game against Freemount High, after being raised from Junior Varsity status. It was on a thursday, in the evening around 4 pm, my brother Dedric would walk through the front door immediately complaining about his kids mother pulling guns and knives on him because of his whereabouts earlier that day. Planning to leave the girl with the home and a vehicle, Dedric couldn't put the move down fast enough before she caught him at the house trying to pack some clothes, and would shoot him in the head with a shot gun. After doing this, she then picked up the phone to call our home in which I would answer the phone, only to hear the unbelief that she was calling to share, 'that she had killed my brother.' Due to having a scripturally sound mother with a faith that has moved mountains; after sharing the news, we traveled to the crime scene and a still silence took place in the car. Once inside my brothers home; Dedric had such a peaceful countenance about his face, he literally appeared to be smiling. My mother would then whisper to my sister and I, 'my baby is finally in peace, thank you Jesus.' My sister would then turn around to locate the baby mother and would humbly state, 'Leshia' why you do that? Mixed emotions ran through my mind, before being captivated by the killers evil spirit demanding that I beat her face in. As a youth, my understanding had to be inclined by my mother and God; not to relieve this women with harm, from the curse that comes with being a murderer. While going through the mourning process; crying tears dry, hoping to escape through sleep only to wake up starving with no appetite, is when I realized the scripture,"when your flesh is made weak your spirit is made strong." We can do much in the state of fasting, just stay prayed up! San Bernardino...
