A diet rich in fruits and vegetables are associated with a lowered risk for ARMD. Presumably, this protection is the result of increased intake of antioxidant vitamins and minerals. However, various "non-essential" food components, such as the nonprovitamin A carotenes (carotenes that are not converted to vitamin A) lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene, along with flavonoids, are proving to be even more significant in protecting against ARMD than traditional nutritional antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium. For example, one study compared patients with age-related macular degeneration to healthy controls. Individuals with low levels of lycopene were found to be twice as likely to have age-related macular degeneration.

The macula, especially the central portion (the fovea), owes its yellow color to its high concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin. These yellow carotenes function in preventing oxidative damage to the area of the retina responsible for fine vision and obviously play a central role in protecting against the development of macular degeneration.
   The best way to protect against ARMD is through diet. In particular, regular consumption of foods rich in the important carotenes for the eye is highly recommended. In addition, lutein and zeaxanthin are also available in pill form. These are three primary types of carotene supplements on the market:
1) Synthetic all-trans-beta-carotene
   2) Beta- and alpha-carotene from the algae Dunaliella
3) Mixed carotenes from palm oil

When speaking with patients, I try to base my recommendations on the scientific data. There aren't any definitive studies about the benefits of vitamin supplements yet, but i'm goin to tell you what i do based upon the evidence there is.
Each month , dozens of reports come out on the subject of vitamins and minerals. Despite all the information, many gaps in our knowledge remain. We know, for example, that people who eat diets high in certain nutrients like beta-carotene and vitamin C have lower rates of some cancers. Does that mean that taking a dietary supplement containing these vitamins will reduce your risk for cancer? No one really can say for sure.

Many medical experts say it's wrong for doctors to recommend something to their patients before there's scientific proof of its effectiveness. The problem is, people can't wait. In the "real world," we often have to make choices based on incomplete information. Even if the hard science isn't in yet, people want to know what makes the most sense now.

Many experts fail to recognize that there can be serious consequences to withholding recommendations until the proof is in. Consider this: As a first-year med student in 1979, I asked a professor who had just given us a lecture on heart disease whether he would recommend a low-fat diet to people at risk for heart attack. No, he replied, there wasn't enough evidence yet. I thought to myself that maybe there wasn't enough evidence for him, but there was for me. By that point I'd already been eating a low-fat diet for a couple of years.

I had been doing so based on the theory that dietary fat contributes to the buildup of cholesterol in coronary arteries...a theory that seemed to have been confirmed by several preliminary studies.
Think of all the heart patients who might have benefited if doctors back then had been willing to recommend a low-fat diet. After all, the risk of cutting down on fat is pretty small. The situation is similar with vitamin supplements today. There are theoretical reasons to take antioxidants (including vitamins C and E and the mineral selenium). They gobble up free radicals, ubiquitous molecules that are thought to contribute to the development of both cancer and heart disease. And the evidence is that the risk of taking moderate doses of these vitamins is pretty small. In that spirit, here are my educated guesses. Every morning, in addition to a multivitamin with minerals, I take 250 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, 400 international units of natural vitamin E and 200 micrograms of selenium. Whenever possible, I buy inexpensive store brands. Even though I take these supplements, I firmly believe that a healthful diet is more important. If you eat poorly, I doubt you can undo all the damage by popping a few vitamins. Accordingly, I've been a not-too-strict vegetarian for years, consuming mostly whole grains, fruits, legumes, vegetables, a little fish and some low-fat dairy products like yogurt. To me, the vitamins are like a little added insurance. My educated guesses could turn out to be wrong, so by all means stay tuned. New evidence might suggest the benefits of some vitamins not previously understood...while discrediting others. Like me, plenty of doctors take dietary supplements, even if they don't recommend them to their patients. In this case, you may want to do what we do... and not what we say.

program, the body adapts.

The body's response to this regular stress is that it becomes stronger, functions more efficiently, and has greater endurance. Exercise is a vital component of health, especially sexual health.
Regular exercise improves a man's sexual performance. In one study, the effect of nine months of regular exercise on aerobic work capacity (physical fitness), coronary heart disease risk factors, and sexuality were studied in seventy-eight sedentary but healthy men (mean age: forty-eight years). The men exercised in supervised groups for sixty minutes per day, 3.5 days per week on average. Peak sustained exercise intensity was targeted at seventy-five to eighty percent of maximum heart rate (see A Healthy Lifestyle for description). A control group of seventeen men (mean age: forty-four years) participated in organized walking at a moderate pace for sixty minutes per day, 4.1 days per week on average. Each subject maintained a daily diary of exercise, diet, smoking, and sexuality during the first and last months of the program.

As with many other studies, beneficial effects of regular exercise on fitness and coronary heart disease risk factors were demonstrated. Analysis of diary entries revealed significantly greater sexuality enhancements in the exercise group (frequency of various intimate activities, reliability of adequate functioning during sex, percentage of satisfying orgasms, etc.).

Moreover, the degree of sexuality enhancement among exercisers was correlated with the degree of their individual improvement in fitness. In other words, the better physical fitness the men were able to attain, the better their sexuality.

Now doubt you already know that you can often save on costly medications by generic equivalents. Here are five more cost cutting tricks...

*Ask for free samples. Doctors are deluged with drug samples from manufacturers but they don't always distribute these samples to their patients.
Ask, and you may get a week or more of a pricey drug for free.
Caution: Check expiration dates. Forgo samples that have been sitting around the doctor's office for too long.
*Use mail order or the Internet...but only when appropriate. Buying prescriptions by mail or on the Internet can be an economical, convenient way to purchase drugs. However, many mail-order pharmacies use nonpharmacist to fill prescriptions.
while a pharmacist does do a final check, the volume of drugs being processed is very high--and mistakes are possible.
Going the mail-order or Internet route also means you lose the benefit of a face-to-face meeting with your pharmacist--who can warn you about drug interactions or answer your questions on the spot.

*Bottom line: If you want to use mail order or the Internet, do so only with drugs you're familiar with--- ideally, drugs you mus t take on a long-term basis. That way, you reduce your risk of taking the wrong drug or falling victim to unforeseen drug interactions.

Don't let your insurance company impose limits on prescription length. If your doctor writes a prescription for a 90-day supply of pills, your insurer may approve only a 30-day supply.
Limiting your prescription in this manner helps the insurer cut costs...but cost you money and extra trips to the drugstore.
Loophole: If you need 90 days of pills but your insurer covers only 30 days, ask your doctor to substitute " take as directed" instead of "take once a day" on the prescription form.
That makes it hard for the insurance company to calculate how many pills comprise a 30-day supply. You'll be able to get the full 90-day supply filled.
Caution: Find out how often the drug should be taken, and write it yourself on the bottle.
Avoid time-release formulations. Many prescription drugs are available in both time release and non-time forms. Time-release pills are more convenient because they don't have to be taken as often as their "plain" counterparts. But they're also more costly.
*Look into patient-assistance programs. Under such programs---offered by most pharmaceutical makers but rarely publicized--individuals short on cash because of job loss or another financial setback may qualify for free prescription medication.
In most cases, all that's required is your doctor's certification that you're unable to afford a costly but necessary medication.
Call the manufacturer directly to find out if a particular drug is available through such a program---and what the terms are.

I am growing moringa in my yard in south Florida. I have an old cat that was looking very rugged, he had an infection on his nose that was difficult to treat and he is difficult to deal with. I give him some dried moringa in his wet cat food each day. In two months he looked like a new cat, I swear he looks five years younger and it is obvious he feels better. I use it on myself also, I put dried moringa leaves in my yogurt daily. If it helps my old cat, I know it helps me. December 23, 2014. I want to add the cat even looks better as I have continued to feed him the moringa. He is getting fatter also, he had lost some much weight. I swear he looks like a teenager now! I mix at least a full teaspoon of Moringa in a small can of wet food, mixed with some dry food. I still put dried
Moringa in many of the foods I consume. I don't know if it helps me, but I have never been sick in any way. I am 67.

The Intricate Details About The Moringa Tree!

Growing a Moringa Tree can be challenging, they grow best in warm tropical weather. In this type of weather this will allow the moringa oleifera species to be exact, to grow continually without being stunted. Some of the best US Hardiness Zones are 9, 10 and 11, but with proper care the moringa will just about grow anywhere. Moringa trees are delicate and demand respect; there is about a 50% survival rate when transplanting them. First root shock can occur if the soil is disturbed which can proceed to air exposure and other airborne elements not needed near sensitive tap roots, let alone the core-root. Now to increase the survival rate when transplanting moringa; vitamin B1 is one of the keys to my preventative measures and success stories.

Growing Conditions:

I recommend that vitamin B1, be added to all moringa tree transplants. I have noticed an increase from root shock at about an 85% survival rate using 1 cup per gallon of water. For more, allow me to bring to your attention that moringa trees, all “thirteen species” of them, have no need for fertilizers if your soil has a well balanced eco-system, the proper order of microorganisms. Hot/Cold Climates: In 70 to 98 degrees the moringa tree will grow as a perennial, year around. Past dealings have yielded from the seed that they can grow, a foot in two weeks time. You can have a 15 foot moringa tree in no time soon in this type of weather. When it comes to colder climates; the 20’s and below, lasting for long periods, will totally do a moringa no justice. So if you want them year around, they must be grown inside your home or in a heated greenhouse, keeping a temperature of 70 degrees plus. Remember, the cooler the temperature gets, the slower the moringa tree will grow; more mature and larger trees become more cold tolerant. Younger moringa trees will; a lot of times die back and go into hibernation, leaving the owner until the weather heats back up again.

Eating spicy foods is not a quick prescription for a longer life

Before you run out and re-stock your refrigerator with fresh chili peppers, you should know that this study’s findings come with some major caveats.
Could eating spicy food — particularly food seasoned with fresh chili pepper — help you live longer?

That’s certainly what some headlines suggested last week after the publication in the BMJof a large study from China that looked at the link between spicy-food consumption and how long people live.

The study, which involved more than 500,000 Chinese residents aged 30 to 79, reported that individuals who ate spicy food six or seven days a week were 14 percent less likely to die during a seven-year period than their peers who ate spicy food less than once a week.

The effect seemed to be stronger among people who consumed fresh, rather than dried, chili pepper (the main spice used by the Chinese participants in this study).

The effect was significantly weaker, however, among people who also drank alcohol. (That’s not good news for individuals who can’t imagine eating chicken vindaloo, red curry or pork tacos without their favorite brew.)
