Before you run out and re-stock your refrigerator with fresh chili peppers, you should know that this study’s findings come with some major caveats.
Could eating spicy food — particularly food seasoned with fresh chili pepper — help you live longer?
That’s certainly what some headlines suggested last week after the publication in the BMJof a large study from China that looked at the link between spicy-food consumption and how long people live.
The study, which involved more than 500,000 Chinese residents aged 30 to 79, reported that individuals who ate spicy food six or seven days a week were 14 percent less likely to die during a seven-year period than their peers who ate spicy food less than once a week.
The effect seemed to be stronger among people who consumed fresh, rather than dried, chili pepper (the main spice used by the Chinese participants in this study).
The effect was significantly weaker, however, among people who also drank alcohol. (That’s not good news for individuals who can’t imagine eating chicken vindaloo, red curry or pork tacos without their favorite brew.)

Crafting better M.E.A.L.S.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health teamed up with the non-profit anti-hunger organization Project Bread to create the Modifying Eating and Lifestyles at School (MEALS) study, a randomized clinical trial in two urban, low-income school districts.
Subjects consisted of more than 2,500 third- through eighth-grade students from 14 elementary and middle schools in Massachusetts.
The team set out to examine the short- and long-term effects of a professional chef and the effect of extended daily exposure to a choice architecture intervention on students' school food selection and consumption. "Choice architecture" is a term that is used to describe the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision-making.
"Overall, we found that both collaborating with a chef to enhance the school meals and using choice architecture techniques provide benefits," write the study's authors. "However, improving food quality and palatability was a more effective long-term method to increase consumption of healthier school foods." We all know adequate protein (especially after a workout) is key to building and repairing muscles, but a high-protein diet may also be the secret to consistent weight loss. In fact, research has shown that doubling your protein intake can help you drop pounds without losing muscle mass. In one study, published in The FASEB Journal, researchers put 39 patients on a weight-loss regimen over 31 days; at first, all participants were on the same diet to maintain their current weight. After 10 days, they were split into three groups following calorie-restricted diets: those who ate the US-recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein, those who ate twice the RDA of protein, and those who ate three times the RDA of protein. The participants exercised accordingly in order to lose an average of two pounds a week. The researchers found that those who ate double the protein were able to lose fat without losing muscle mass while exercising on the diet. The participants who ate triple the amount of protein didn’t experience any more weight loss than the double group.

The human body has a normal core temperature between 98.6 and 99.9 degrees Fahrenheit (F). In order to maintain this temperature without the aid of any warming or cooling device, the external environment must be at about 82 F. Clothes aren’t just a social convention — they’re necessary warming tools. We can usually add on more layers in colder months, and use fans or air conditioners in warmer months in order to maintain that healthy core temperature.
However, in some cases, you may find yourself in an environment with temperature extremes. It’s essential to know what health concerns you may face, and how to avoid any temperature-related problems.

The HeatIt’s important to note that the temperature reading on a thermometer is not necessarily the temperature for which you should be concerned. The relative humidity in an environment can significantly affect what’s called the “apparent temperature,” or the temperature you actually feel. If the air temperature reads 85 F, but there’s zero humidity, it will actually feel like it’s 78 F, whereas the same air temperature in an environment with 80 percent humidity will feel like 97 F.
High environmental temperatures can be dangerous to the human body. In the range of 90 to 105 F, heat cramps and exhaustion may occur. Between 105 and 130 F, heat exhaustion is almost certain, and activities should be significantly limited. An environmental temperature over 130 degrees F is likely to lead to heatstroke.
